NE Portland
History Historic homes are on of the key features of this part of town with most being built in the early 1900’s. Neighborhoods like the Historic Irvington district and the Historic Piedmont district have undergone large-scale restorations and are currently some of the most sought after neighborhoods for homebuyers, though there are many apartments and rental homes available as well. A varied neighborhood where you can find amazing soul food restaurants, chic independent coffee shops, authentic Mexican food, as well as unique clothing and retail shops. NE Portland offers a little bit of everything for every kind of person. Description Historic Irvington district is the flagship of renovated historic neighborhoods. Gorgeous old homes, renovated, streets lined with huge trees. Many neighborhoods in NE are going through similar transformations. Broadway St. has tons of restaurants and specialty shops and access to downtown as well as freeway access is quick and easy. Piedmont district is up and coming, as is the Hollywood district. This neighborhood has the residential feel for those who don’t want to feel like their living in the city, but offers all the conveniences of downtown a short trip by car or bus. This is a gorgeous part of Portland, with so much to do and discover, it’ll keep surprising you with its quality and variety. Our Favorite Spots McMenamins Kennedy School is a restaurant/hotel/movie theater/concert venue. This elementary school was in operation for 80 years before it was abandoned. The McMenamins brothers bought the property and turned it into a hotel, with a large restaurant, several pubs featuring their own micro-brews, and a good-sized movie theater where you can eat not only popcorn but enjoy a great slice of pizza and a beer (if you’re old enough of course). Cha Cha Cha’s on Broadway is a must visit for great Mexican food on a budget. Residents This vibrant neighborhood is home to many people who work downtown but don’t want to live downtown. You’ll find everyone from families to young singles. The Max line runs quite conveniently along I-84 (the southern "border" of NE Portland), taking commuters downtown for work. Most folks who live here have been in Portland for quite awhile and the rising prices of housing show how highly sought after it is. You’ll find many students live in NE as well since there are a couple universities in the area such as Concordia University. Rental Housing Lots of single-family houses, split equally between renters and owners, some apartment buildings but mostly house rentals. Not many apartment complexes here, definitely the more unique rentals, from duplexes to 5 and 6-plex apartment buildings. Most of Portland offers unique rental opportunities, and NE is no exception. You can drive down any street and be hard pressed to find two of the same kind of home or apartment building. Fun Stuff Peninsula Park city Rose Garden has over 8,000 roses! And is just one of several rose gardens in Portland. Its no wonder they call it the City of Roses. This park is a great place to walk your dog, picnic in the park next to the roses, or use the tennis or basketball courts. In the summer the water fountain in the center of the rose garden is the place to cool off and is a great place for families to bring their kids.
