North Portland
History This part of town is still getting its feet as far as development goes. But it does have many great features that make it worth considering in your rental search. The University of Portland was founded in 1901 and has grown to be one of the best universities on the West Coast. There are several beautiful city parks in the area and access to I-5 is excellent. Description The best way to describe North Portland is to say it’s diverse in all areas. A great mixture of ages, ethnicity, homeowners, renters, college students and families give North Portland a feel all its own. You’ll find many tree-lined streets, more of Portland’s amazing city parks, a top University, small family owned restaurants and taverns, and a host of unique homes and apartments to rent. For those looking to get into a rental on the lower scale of the price range, this is a neighborhood to check out. While it doesn’t have the draw of neighborhoods like Northwest or Southeast, it’s a great place for people looking to get into an affordable rental or even for those looking to buy. With space at a premium in Portland, this neighborhood is sure to draw developers looking for that next hot spot to build. Our Favorite Spots Local brewers, and brothers, Kurt and Rob Widmer, started Widmer Brewery, one of the West Coasts largest craft breweries. They have made a name for themselves on the national level, this brewery offers tours and has a restaurant, the Widmer Gasthaus. Make sure to stop by for a visit and try one of their handcrafted beers, or just stop by to get an inside look at how to brew beer. Residents North Portland is home to students, families, and a wide range of age groups. Its close proximity to the University of Portland explains the abundance of 18-22 year olds, though it’s certainly not a "college atmosphere" in most of North Portland. It’s a quiet neighborhood, a place to rest after a night out on the town, which is fairly convenient by public transport or car. Rental Housing Mostly populated by homeowners, but there are rentals available, largely because of the University of Portland. You won’t find high-rises or many apartment complexes, mostly duplex or triplexes, and other rentals like mother-in-law units, or large homes that rent out apartments. There is also an abundance of student housing for the U of P. Fun Stuff The University of Portland features top men and women’s soccer teams. During soccer season be sure to take in a game on the weekend. With affordable ticket prices and great college competition this is a great opportunity to watch some of the best soccer talent in the country.
