SE Portland
History SE Portland has long been a place that draws people from all walks of life. Maybe it's the fact that one of its main areas of activity, the Hawthorne District was named after a psychiatrist who worked at an asylum near Mt. Tabor, but this part of town is constantly recognized as a place of variety and uniqueness, distinct from all other parts of Portland. It'll bring out the many parts of your personality as you wander its rustic shops; sample its cafes and its fine dining establishments. While it's not immune to the new developments, its character has remained pretty much the same over the years.
Description The Hawthorne district (the name given to the neighborhood surrounding SE Hawthorne St.) has a very bohemian atmosphere, with a thriving local culture, many new and used bookstores, coffee shops (ok they're everywhere) and specialty shops. Some beautiful parks and gorgeous older homes give SE Portland a classic neighborhood feel. You'll find the unique homes and one of a kind restaurants and shops in this neighborhood, but without the sometimes pretentious personality of places like NW Portland. This neighborhood is a bit more laid back and casual, yet serious about preserving the culture and natural beauty of the parks, homes and locally owned shops and restaurants. Another popular attraction of SE Portland is the many antique shops on "Antique Row" in the Sellwood-Moreland district. Adding to the uniqueness of this neighborhood, you are able to find thousands of antiques to browse through. On top of all that you can see some of the best views of Portland and its beautiful landscapes from the many scenic points on Mt. Tabor.
Our Favorite Spots One of the best spots to take in a movie (albeit second run movies) is the Baghdad Theater/Pub. This is another historic venue that was bought by the McMenamins brothers and renovated while keeping the historic feel to the theater. This great theater is the perfect place to catch that movie you missed the first time around and it'll only cost you $3-4. The Aladdin Theater concert venue is a fantastic theater, seating about 600, which brings in an unending list of amazing musical groups. This venue is annually voted one of the best music venues in the city.
Residents SE Portland is home to many who would be considered part of the various counter cultures out there. However, it really is just a place that feels like home to those who don't want an apartment or home that looks just like every other one on the block. The common thread of residents in SE Portland is that they are vigilant about protecting their community from new construction projects that may harm the existing culture and community feel of the neighborhood. Like almost every neighborhood in Portland, its home to singles as well as families, old and young alike. For those who are looking for something just a bit left of the mainstream, this neighborhood could be for you.
Rental Housing Here you'll find quite a few smaller apartment buildings, rental homes and duplexes. You'll find lots of unique rentals here. Not many "modern" buildings, and the atmosphere of SE Portland probably wouldn't gel with something like that. SE Portland, like NE and NW Portland, boasts unique homes and apartments, diversity is the name of the game here. Head out west if you want to find the mega complex apartments or downtown if you want a high-rise apartment building.
Fun Stuff If you're looking for an antique doorknob to complete your house, or would love to find something to match your 18th century claw foot bathtub, than Hippo Hardware is where you should begin your search. This store has everything for your home redecorating plans, and is a great place for hard to find house wares. For the antique lover, it's also a fun place to just wander and spend a weekend looking for those rare finds to add the finishing touches to your home projects.
