Vancouver

History
Located directly across the Columbia River from Portland, OR this historic city is one of the fastest growing areas in lower Washington. The legendary Hudson Bay Company, who established the first non-Native settlement at Ft. Vancouver, a major center for fur trading and other commerce, and Officers Row are symbols of the foundation of the new West, and now serve as highly popular tourist destinations. Vancouver is the 4th largest city in Washington and is continuing to expand and develop more and more communities for its ever-burgeoning population.

Description
Vancouver is generally known as being the city "just across the river from Portland." But it is certainly more than that. From its waterfront communities on the Columbia River, stretching north into the more open, rural areas near Battle Ground, Vancouver has a lot to offer for renters today. While there isn't much by way of an urban living experience, there is a lot of growth going on as far as business development and recreation. There are several beautiful city parks, lakes, and other attractions for people who love the outdoors. Vancouver has that unique location that allows it to utilize the closeness of Portland and all it offers, while providing a completely different lifestyle to people who choose to live here. Many people take advantage of being able to work in Portland and live in Vancouver, though with the development going on, more and more are choosing to live, work, and play on the North side of the Columbia River.

Our Favorite Spots
When the weather is nice, one great place to spend the day outdoors is the Waterfront Renaissance Trail. Located on the banks of the Columbia River, this 4 mile stretch of walking trail is the focal point of Vancouver's waterfront project which also includes the Marine and Waterfront parks, as well as many great restaurants and shops to entertain you. This is one of Vancouver's best spots to get outside, have a picnic or go for a walk or jog along the water.

Residents
Since Vancouver is such a fast growing city, you'll find every kind of resident living in its neighborhoods. Single families, many who work in Portland but live in Washington, students attending the local colleges, such as Clark College or the Washington State University branch in Vancouver. With many long time residents, you'll find people young and old alike. As Vancouver's borders expand so does the diversity of its population.

Rental Housing
With not much of a downtown to speak of, you'll find very few high-rise type apartments here. There are endless options as far as apartment communities go however, with a wide variety of rental ranges. Plenty of rental homes as well. Again, the size of Vancouver allows for a huge variety in the rental options, what it will lack however is the urban living atmosphere of Portland. The rental market has the feel of a suburb rather than a city.

Fun Stuff
A yearly favorite in area is the Clark County Fair. Every summer, the Clark County fairgrounds puts on a weeklong event complete with concerts, rides, and everything else you'd expect from a county fair. The Clark County Fair attracts hundred of thousands of visitors each year and is one of the most popular family events of the year. Check out www.clarkcofair.com for events and ticket info for Southwest Washington's biggest event.
