Aloha/Beaverton

History
The city that was known in the 1700?s, as "Beaver Dam" by settlers new to the area and "Chakeipi" which means "land of the beavers" by the Native Americans living there at the time, is fast becoming one of the most populated areas in the state.  Just west of Portland on I-26, Beaverton is home to around 80,000 residents.   Hillsboro is right next-door and boasts just as large a population as does Beaverton.  Hillsboro was named after David Hill, a settler who arrived by wagon train and played a role in helping Oregon become a recognized state of the U.S.  Since they share so much in common and offer much of the same lifestyle, these two cities are generally discussed in the same light and are combined on this site for that reason.

Description
The suburbs!  Beaverton and Hillsboro are distinct cities in their own right and have a much different feel than Portland does.  With much more residential options and more room to spread out, this area is growing fast.  Home to major technology businesses like Intel and Tektronix, as well as the world headquarters for Nike, has helped draw lots of residents, you?ll find the rental rates lower in this part of town on average because of the amount of options out there.  This area has a large variety of outdoor and recreational options and is a great place for families and others looking to live in an area with a lot to offer.

For shopping you?ll find several mall options, from Washington Square Mall to smaller ones like Beaverton Towne Center.  With literally hundreds of restaurant options as well as movie theaters, this area is sure to have plenty to keep you going.  With quick freeway access, you can also be on your way to the beach in no time at all.  It?s only just over an hour away to great beaches like Canon beach and Seaside.

Our Favorite Spots
At Beaverton Town Center, you?ll find a 24hr Starbucks that often features live music on the weekends.  It?s a great meeting place and will showcase some great local and touring musicians.  One of the local favorites in this part of town is Nonna Emilia?s, a great Italian restaurant that offers some of the best deep-dish pizza in town.  Often packed to capacity, especially on weekends, this great restaurant is the place to go for Italian food on the Westside.

Residents
Families, singles, everyone you?d expect to find in the suburbs.  Renters are a bit more common here but not by much.  The percentages are about even between renters and homeowners.  Lots of residents here commute to Portland causing a lot of traffic headaches on I-26.  If it weren?t for the MAX taking some of the load off the amount of commuters, it would probably be unbearable.  But with lots of new communities building up and newer opportunities for work and entertainment being built on the Westside, the need to head into Portland for entertainment is lessening and making Beaverton and Hillsboro a more desirable place to not just live but visit as well.

Rental Housing
Beaverton and Hillsboro has lots of the mega apartment complexes as well as rental homes. This part of town will have the 200-300 unit apartment complexes, with all the community features those offer.  Lots of new apartment communities are here, with many older complexes being renovated; you can find a nice, if typical, apartment in this part of town without much of a problem.  Also a good place to find affordable rental homes, and are a definite price break from the high rents of Portland.  A good suburb offers you options; Beaverton and Hillsboro does just that.

Fun Stuff
The annual Airshow at the Hillsboro Airport is a big draw each year.  With acts like the Blue Angels performing in 2004, this is a great outing for families and an event that is highly anticipated each year.  The proceeds help benefit the community of Hillsboro.
